Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit President Giani Harpreet Singh on Friday questioned the registration of FIRs against protesters and said the Constitution of India gives every citizen the right to hold peaceful protests and present their concerns before the government.
Giani Harpreet Singh questioned why Punjabis were allegedly being prevented from entering Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, to raise their demands and why cases were being registered against those seeking to submit a memorandum outside the Chief Minister’s residence.
He said the registration of an FIR against members of the Waris Punjab De organisation for holding a peaceful protest was an attack on democratic rights. He added that issues in a democracy should be resolved through dialogue rather than through police cases.
Giani Harpreet Singh said the Chief Minister should have personally received the memorandum and clarified the government’s position on the demand for the release of Bandi Singhs. He said the Chief Minister had supported the issue before assuming office and should have taken the initiative after coming to power.
“We strongly condemn the restrictions imposed on Punjabis, especially Sikhs, from holding peaceful protests in their own capital and the registration of FIRs against more than 3,000 protesters,” he said.
