The political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress intensified on Friday, with BJP MP Anurag Thakur accusing the Gandhi family of being “filled with arrogance”, a day after moving a breach of privilege and contempt notice against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.
Thakur had submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla under Rules 222 and 223 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, alleging that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks during the debate on the anti-paper leak Bill amounted to a breach of privilege and contempt of the House.
During the debate, Rahul Gandhi had criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police action against young protesters during the Parliament march held on July 20.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Thakur alleged that the Congress had repeatedly undermined institutions, including the armed forces and the police.
He claimed that the party had questioned military operations such as the surgical strikes, airstrikes and Operation Sindoor, and accused its leaders of making objectionable remarks inside Parliament. Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Home Minister and comments on the media, as well as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s reported remarks about the media in the House, Thakur said the Congress leadership was displaying arrogance despite being out of power for over a decade.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari also criticised the Congress leadership, alleging that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks against the Home Minister and his opposition to the anti-paper leak Bill had damaged the party’s credibility.
Congress MP Tariq Anwar, however, defended Rahul Gandhi, dismissing the BJP’s allegations as political posturing. He said the Leader of Opposition had not made any inappropriate remarks and maintained that questions raised over the events of July 20 were legitimate, as law and order falls under the Home Minister’s responsibility.
