Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday drew attention after responding sharply to a reporter who sought his reaction to a press conference held by the families of Delhi Police personnel injured during the July 20 student march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament.
When asked for his comments on the concerns raised by the families, Rahul Gandhi replied, “Bhaiya, are you from the BJP?”, without directly addressing the question.
Earlier in the day, family members of several Delhi Police personnel injured during the July 20 clashes addressed the media, recounting their experiences and the challenges they faced after the violence. They appealed for justice and questioned what they described as attempts to politicise the incident while overlooking the injuries sustained by police personnel.
According to reports, more than 200 police personnel were injured during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march after clashes broke out between protesters and the police. Authorities have maintained that the protest turned violent, resulting in stone-pelting and attacks on security personnel. The circumstances surrounding the violence remain a matter of political dispute.
The issue has since sparked a political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP.
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad criticised Rahul Gandhi’s response and called for greater sensitivity towards injured police personnel and their families.
“The attack on police personnel and the injuries they sustained is a matter where we should show sensitivity. They also have families, they also have children, and they also have human rights,” Prasad told reporters.
He added that while peaceful protests deserve respect, the involvement of individuals engaged in violence should be investigated and addressed.
The Congress had earlier accused the government of attempting to divert attention from the handling of the student protest by highlighting the injuries sustained by police personnel.
