Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Thursday emphasised the importance of safe and nutritious food, stating that pure food is the foundation of a healthy society and a key requirement for building a vibrant Punjab.
Dr Balbir Singh was addressing a Food Safety Seminar held at Hotel Shaurya, Patiala, as the chief guest. The seminar, organised jointly by the Patiala Deputy Commissioner’s office, Civil Surgeon’s office and Food Safety Department, was held on the theme, “Rangla Punjab is Our Shared Responsibility—Safe and Nutritious Food, the Foundation of Good Health.”
Addressing participants, the Health Minister said the saying “As the food, so the mind” reflects an important principle of healthy living. He said that like clean air and pure water, safe, nutritious and quality food is essential for maintaining good health.
Dr Balbir Singh said spreading awareness about healthy eating habits among people is crucial for achieving the vision of ‘Rangla Punjab’ envisioned by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He added that the state government has been regularly organising awareness programmes to promote food safety and healthy lifestyles.
The Minister said experts from Punjab Agricultural University, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), and farmers involved in natural and organic farming participated in the seminar. He said these institutions would work together to educate the younger generation about the benefits of chemical-free and organic food.
Highlighting the role of organic farming, Dr Balbir Singh said farmers avoiding chemical fertilisers and pesticides help produce healthier and better-quality food grains. He appealed to people to adopt natural and organic food practices as much as possible.
He also said the Health Department regularly conducts inspections of food business operators and vendors to ensure availability of safe food and prevent the sale of adulterated or substandard products.
Food Safety Commissioner Kanwarpreet Brar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Navreet Kaur Sekhon, Dean C.O.C.S. Kiran Bains, Punjab Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr S.S. Gosal, GADVASU Vice-Chancellor J.S.
