Celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra has shared how his association with late actress Sridevi strengthened his admiration for traditional Indian handloom textiles, while praising her daughter Janhvi Kapoor for carrying forward her mother’s legacy.
Manish recently designed a traditional outfit for Janhvi and shared pictures of the actress wearing a pre-draped, stitched Kanchipuram weave brocade saree in a gilded amethyst shade.
Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the designer spoke about his long-standing love for sarees and handloom fabrics. He recalled being fascinated by his mother’s handwoven sarees that she wore during weddings and said the richness of Kanchipuram and other traditional weaves left a lasting impression on him.
Manish also remembered working with Sridevi on a Malayalam film in the early 1990s, saying the experience further deepened his appreciation for Indian textiles and the cultural heritage associated with them.
He shared that Sridevi and he had explored traditional textiles together during a shopping visit in Chennai, which became a memorable experience for him.
Praising Janhvi Kapoor’s look, Manish said she represents Sridevi’s legacy and described her contemporary interpretation of the Kanchipuram saree as a blend of modern style and traditional craftsmanship.
Earlier, Manish had paid an emotional tribute to his late mother Sudarshan on what would have been her 95th birth anniversary. He shared childhood memories and family pictures while expressing his affection and longing for her.
