India narrowly missed adding two more medals to its Commonwealth Games 2026 tally on Thursday as shot putter Manpreet Kaur finished fourth in the women’s final, while distance runner Parul Chaudhary secured fifth place in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Manpreet came agonisingly close to the podium after holding third position until the final round of the shot put competition. She opened with a throw of 15.92m before steadily improving her performance, producing her best effort of 17.49m in the fifth round to move into the bronze-medal position.
However, Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron delivered a final-round throw of 17.87m to displace the Indian athlete from the podium. Cameron matched Nigeria’s Jessica Oji with the same distance but settled for silver on countback, while Oji claimed bronze. Canada’s Sarah Mitton dominated the event, winning gold with a best throw of 19.88m.
Manpreet had one final opportunity to reclaim a medal position, but fouled on her last attempt, ending her campaign in fourth place.
In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Asian Games medallist Parul Chaudhary clocked 9:26.75 to finish fifth. The Indian runner remained with the leading pack during the early stages before losing ground midway through the race. Although she attempted a late surge in the closing lap, she was unable to bridge the gap to the medal contenders.
Kenya’s Faith Cherotich won the gold medal in a Games record time of 9:01.76. England’s Elise Thorner claimed silver with a personal best of 9:05.45 after overtaking Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai in the closing stages.
Despite the near misses, India enjoyed a productive day at the Games. Murali Sreeshankar secured silver in the men’s long jump, while para sprinter Dilip Mahadu Gavit won gold with a Games record in the men’s T47 100m. Fellow Indian Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi added to the celebrations by claiming silver, completing a memorable one-two finish for the country.
