US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described artificial intelligence as the most transformative technology of the modern era, saying it would have a greater impact than the internet and stressing that the United States must preserve its technological lead over China while avoiding excessive regulation.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said his administration was examining possible safeguards for the rapidly evolving AI sector but cautioned against policies that could weaken American innovation or competitiveness.
He said the US currently enjoys a significant advantage over China in artificial intelligence but warned that overregulation could allow Beijing to narrow the gap. According to Trump, policymakers must strike a balance between necessary oversight and maintaining an environment that enables technological progress.
Emphasising the strategic importance of AI, Trump said leadership in the field would shape the future of economic growth, innovation and global influence. He described the technology as more consequential than any previous technological revolution, including the rise of the internet.
The President also indicated that his administration did not want to place unnecessary restrictions on American technology companies, saying innovators should be allowed to continue advancing the technology while appropriate safeguards are considered.
Trump’s remarks came in response to a question regarding reports on increasingly advanced ChatGPT models and whether the administration was considering tighter controls on artificial intelligence.
Earlier during the event, Trump welcomed Nvidia founder and Chief Executive Jensen Huang, who attended a White House announcement related to the redevelopment of Washington Dulles International Airport. Praising Huang’s contributions to semiconductor technology, Trump expressed confidence in American technological leadership and highlighted major investments being made in the United States.
Artificial intelligence has become a key area of strategic competition between the United States and China, with both nations investing heavily in advanced chips, AI research, cloud computing and digital infrastructure as they seek to strengthen their economic and national security capabilities.
