The Surat City Cyber Crime Police have arrested a 36-year-old man from Bihar for allegedly sending a hoax bomb threat email to the Surat District Court, claiming that the court premises contained “5,000 kg of RDX.” Police said the message was intended to create panic, disrupt public order and spread fear.
According to investigators, the email was sent on July 13 at 6:13 p.m. to the official email address of the Surat District Court from an unidentified email account. Following the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.
The accused, identified as Raman Mishra, is a native of Dhanuwara village in Bihar’s Darbhanga district. He had been residing in Surat’s Katargam area and is currently unemployed.
Police said a technical investigation led by Inspector K.P. Gameti and the Cyber Crime Branch enabled investigators to trace and arrest the accused. During the probe, it was found that Mishra had allegedly used another person’s mobile phone to send the threatening email instead of his own device.
Investigators said the accused had lived in Surat for nearly a decade and had previously worked as a diamond labourer. In recent months, he had reportedly remained unemployed, spending much of his time watching online educational videos, social media content and learning artificial intelligence-based content creation tools. Police also alleged that he frequently used internet hotspot connections from neighbours after exhausting his own mobile data.
A forensic examination of his mobile phone reportedly uncovered a deleted draft email addressed to the Supreme Court. The draft, recovered from the device’s trash folder, contained a message referring to British colonial rule. Police said the material has been included as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Cyber Crime Police have advised citizens not to hand over unlocked mobile phones to others, warning that device owners may face legal consequences if their phones are used for criminal activities.
The department also urged victims of cyber financial fraud to immediately contact the national cyber helpline 1930, stating that prompt reporting improves the chances of freezing fraudulently transferred funds.
