Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Central government, alleging that the proposed delimitation exercise was part of a larger political strategy aimed at altering the Constitution.
Speaking at a book release function in Mumbai, Thackeray claimed that political parties and elected representatives were being deliberately divided to facilitate the passage of the Delimitation Bill.
He alleged that efforts were underway to engineer splits within political parties to secure support for constitutional changes, accusing the ruling establishment of using political alliances for convenience before discarding them.
Targeting the BJP’s political approach, Thackeray also accused the party of exploiting religious sentiments for electoral gains. Referring to Lord Ram, he alleged that the BJP had used the deity’s name to attain power and later failed to uphold the ideals associated with it.
Responding to repeated criticism from the BJP over Shiv Sena (UBT)’s ideological position, Thackeray rejected allegations that his party had abandoned Hindutva. Instead, he questioned the BJP’s own commitment to values such as dignity, morality and accountability.
The former Maharashtra Chief Minister also addressed the debate over dynastic politics. Defending his family’s political legacy, he said he was proud of his heritage, adding that his family’s public record spanned more than a century. In the same speech, he questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s background and accountability, making a series of political remarks directed at the Prime Minister.
Referring to past statements attributed to Modi about leaving public office if required, Thackeray said the larger concern should be the country’s future rather than that of any individual leader. He asserted that the Thackeray family had consistently stood against injustice and hypocrisy and remained committed to what he described as truthful politics.
The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between the BJP and opposition parties over issues including delimitation, constitutional safeguards and the future political representation of states.
