A civic volunteer has been arrested in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district for allegedly raping a female colleague multiple times after blackmailing her with private photographs, police said on Thursday.
The accused and the woman, both civic volunteers attached to Habra police station, were working together when the alleged incident took place, according to police officials.
The accused was produced before the Barasat court on Wednesday, which sent him to five days of police custody. A case has been registered against him on charges related to rape, intimidation and criminal threats.
According to the complaint filed by the woman, the accused allegedly took photographs of her secretly while she was changing clothes before wearing her uniform. She alleged that he later used the photographs to threaten and blackmail her, forcing her into physical relations against her will.
The woman further alleged that the accused repeatedly threatened to circulate the photographs and warned her of serious consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
After gathering courage, the woman approached Habra police station and submitted a written complaint. Following a preliminary investigation, police arrested the accused civic volunteer.
Barasat Police District Superintendent J. Mercy said the accused had been removed from duty after the complaint was received.
“He was removed from duty after receiving the complaint. A case has been registered,” she said.
The arrest comes amid continued scrutiny over alleged crimes involving civic volunteers in West Bengal. In March this year, a civic volunteer was arrested in connection with allegations of molestation involving a teenage girl in Amta, Howrah district. The girl later died by suicide.
In another high-profile case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
