India’s men’s team advanced to the semifinals of the World Junior Squash Team Championships after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over third-seeded England, while the women’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals following a narrow defeat against the United States.
The fifth-seeded Indian men’s team, who had finished with a bronze medal at the previous edition, continued their strong run with a fighting performance against England. They will now face the United States in the semifinals as they aim to improve on last year’s result.
Aryaveer Dewan gave India an early advantage by winning his match, but Yusha Nafees was unable to close out the tie after a five-game battle against Ismail Khalil. Gurveer Singh then delivered in the deciding match, defeating George Griffiths in straight games to seal India’s place in the last four.
Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team suffered a 1-2 loss to third-seeded USA despite making a promising start.
Reigning World Junior Champion Anahat Singh put India ahead with a straight-games victory over Diya Yadav. However, the United States fought back as Charlotte Sze defeated Rudra Singh 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 to level the contest.
Lily Bourell then completed the comeback for the USA, defeating Anika Dubey in straight games to send her team into the semifinals, where they will meet defending champions Egypt.
In the men’s draw, France created a major upset by defeating sixth-seeded Malaysia 2-0 to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2000. They will face another semifinalist in the competition as the tournament enters its decisive stage.
In the women’s section, Hong Kong, China defeated hosts Canada to continue their title challenge, while fourth-seeded Malaysia secured a semifinal berth after overcoming England.
