President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday congratulated Indian para-athletes Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi, along with long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, for their medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026, describing their achievements as a source of pride and inspiration for the nation.
Gavit created history by winning the gold medal in the men’s T47 100m event with a Games record time of 10.71 seconds, while fellow Indian Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi secured the silver medal in a season-best 10.83 seconds. The result marked a historic one-two finish for India in the event.
In a message shared on social media platform X, President Murmu praised the duo for scripting a memorable chapter in Indian para athletics.
She said their historic gold and silver finish reflected extraordinary determination and excellence and expressed confidence that their achievements would continue to inspire aspiring athletes across the country.
The President also congratulated Murali Sreeshankar after he claimed the silver medal in the men’s long jump with a best leap of 8.09 metres, securing his second consecutive Commonwealth Games silver.
Sreeshankar had also finished second at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 with a jump of 8.08 metres, becoming the first Indian male long jumper to win a Commonwealth Games silver medal. His latest podium finish reinforces his consistency on the international stage.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also lauded Sreeshankar’s achievement, calling it another proud moment for India. He noted that the athlete’s return to top-level competition after overcoming a career-threatening knee injury demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination.
Singh said Sreeshankar’s success would inspire young athletes across the country and wished him continued success in future international competitions.
