Karnataka Police have registered an FIR against BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna over his alleged remarks that the family of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi would meet the same fate as the Babri Masjid, which was demolished in 1992.
The case was registered at Udupi Town Police Station following a complaint filed by Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, president of the Udupi District Congress Committee. Police have invoked Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The alleged remarks were made by Suvarna during a BJP-organised public programme in Udupi. Addressing the gathering, the MLA reportedly said that if the Congress continued with what he described as “dramas”, the party’s leadership and Rahul Gandhi’s family would face a similar outcome as the Babri Masjid demolition.
The statement has triggered a political controversy in Karnataka, with the Congress accusing the BJP legislator of making provocative and inflammatory remarks. A video clip of the speech circulated widely on social media, leading to demands for legal action.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Working President and MLC Manjunatha Bhandary said the state government had taken the matter seriously and would ensure action under the law. He termed the remarks “hateful, derogatory and provocative”, saying such statements were unacceptable from an elected representative.
Bhandary also alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from the NEET question paper leak controversy and protests surrounding the issue by targeting Rahul Gandhi personally. He criticised BJP leaders present at the event for not condemning the remarks.
He further said that political disagreements could not justify threats, hate speech or personal attacks, and warned that such statements could affect communal harmony and law and order, particularly in coastal Karnataka. He added that he would raise the matter with the State Home Minister and seek directions for a swift investigation.
