Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday greeted wildlife enthusiasts on the occasion of Global Tiger Day, highlighting India’s leadership in tiger conservation and reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting the species through science-based strategies, community participation and sustainable development.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said India takes pride in being home to nearly 70 per cent of the world’s wild tiger population. He attributed the country’s success in tiger conservation to its long-standing tradition of living in harmony with nature and the collective efforts of its people.
PM Modi said the government remains committed to strengthening conservation through scientific management, active involvement of local communities and development models that support wildlife protection. He also acknowledged the contributions of forest personnel, scientists and conservationists, describing their dedication as central to safeguarding the country’s tiger population.
The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of empowering communities residing near forest areas and reducing human-wildlife conflict as part of India’s broader conservation strategy.
Global Tiger Day, observed every year on July 29, was established in 2010 during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit to promote awareness about tiger conservation, protect natural habitats and reverse the decline in wild tiger populations worldwide.
According to official data, India is home to the largest population of wild tigers in the world. The government said the country’s achievements in tiger conservation reflect decades of sustained policy support, scientific monitoring and public participation, positioning India as a global leader in wildlife conservation.
The latest All India Tiger Estimation (2022) placed the country’s tiger population at 3,682. The extensive survey covered 20 states and involved field assessments spanning more than 6.41 lakh kilometres, making it one of the world’s largest wildlife monitoring exercises.
Officials said that conserving tigers and their habitats not only protects biodiversity but also strengthens ecological security and supports the country’s vision of sustainable development under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
