CJP Threatens Fresh Nationwide Protests Over Alleged Delay in Withdrawal of FIRs Against Student Protesters

New Delhi, July 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has warned of reviving its nationwide agitation over the examination paper leak issue, alleging that the Centre is using recent Supreme Court observations to avoid fulfilling its assurance to withdraw FIRs registered against peaceful student protesters.

The warning follows the Supreme Court’s recent directions in petitions relating to alleged police excesses during anti-paper leak protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and other locations. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed that no coercive action be taken against peaceful protesters and ordered the release of detainees without prior criminal records, while allowing investigations into existing FIRs to continue.

Speaking to IANS, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das claimed that the government had earlier assured the organisation that no fresh FIRs would be lodged against peaceful protesters and that existing cases would be withdrawn.

According to Das, the organisation was expecting a written communication from the Centre by Tuesday but had not received any such assurance. He alleged that the government was now citing the Supreme Court proceedings to describe the matter as sub judice.

Das maintained that the apex court’s order did not prevent governments from withdrawing criminal cases and asserted that the authority to do so rests with the executive. He alleged that the order was being interpreted in a manner detrimental to students and urged the government to honour the commitments made during negotiations.

The CJP spokesperson warned that if the assurances were not implemented, the organisation would resume protests in support of students facing legal proceedings. He also claimed that protesters in states including Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh continued to face harassment and criminal cases.

The organisation reiterated its demand that all FIRs against peaceful protesters across the country be withdrawn and legal protection be extended to students involved in the demonstrations.

The CJP launched its protest campaign against examination paper leaks at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 20, with one of its principal demands being the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The agitation culminated in a Parliament March on July 20, during which clashes broke out between protesters and security personnel. More than 118 police personnel were injured in the violence.

Following two rounds of discussions between government representatives and the CJP, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister. The organisation subsequently ended its 37-day protest after the Centre assured that no action would be taken against peaceful protesters and that families of students who allegedly died by suicide in connection with the NEET paper leak controversy would receive compensation.
