Congress Alleges BJP Has Alienated Gen Z Over Police Action Against Student Protesters

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the BJP has lost the confidence of Generation Z following the recent police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar, claiming that young people have rejected the ruling party’s approach towards student concerns.

Addressing the media, Congress MP and AICC Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera said the young generation was disillusioned with the BJP over the handling of the student protests and the remarks made by some ruling party leaders about the demonstrators.

Khera alleged that BJP leaders had attempted to justify the use of force against protesting students and had made derogatory comments about the conduct of the younger generation. He also claimed that some leaders had questioned the participation of women in the protests, which, according to him, had further angered students.

Referring to the recent student agitation, Khera said Generation Z comprises young people who have experienced the impact of the global economic slowdown, the Covid-19 pandemic and repeated examination paper leak controversies. He urged the BJP leadership to empathise with their concerns instead of making comments that could offend them.

In an apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent video message aimed at engaging with young people, Khera remarked that Gen Z had “rejected” the Prime Minister’s outreach, alleging that the government’s actions spoke louder than its messaging.

The Congress leader’s remarks came on a day when the Lok Sabha began discussing the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.

During the debate, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the government’s handling of the student protests. Referring to the Prime Minister’s video message, she said winning the trust of young people required a genuine change in approach rather than carefully crafted social media communication.

She further alleged that force had been used against student protesters and maintained that while demonstrations could be dispersed, the concerns raised by students could not be ignored.

The BJP had not immediately responded to the Congress leaders’ latest remarks.
