The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a proclaimed offender allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi-Hashim Baba crime syndicate in connection with the 2024 murder of businessman and gym co-owner Nadir Shah in South Delhi.
The accused, identified as Saddam Hussain alias Sonu, had been evading arrest since September 2024. He was apprehended by a Special Cell/NDR team led by Inspectors Alok Kumar Maurya and Nitu Kumar under the supervision of ACP Ashish Kumar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell/NDR) Praveen Kumar Tripathi said on Monday that 16 members of the crime syndicate had already been arrested in the case.
According to the police, Saddam was arrested from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh on July 20 following specific intelligence received from a credible source. Based on his disclosure, investigators recovered a pistol and three live cartridges from the Shastri Park area of Delhi.
Police said Nadir Shah was shot outside his gym in Greater Kailash-I on the night of September 12, 2024, and later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation has alleged that the murder was orchestrated by the Lawrence Bishnoi-Hashim Baba syndicate as part of an extortion racket.
Investigators alleged that Saddam, along with Sajid Faddi, a close associate of gangster Hashim Baba, provided logistical support to the shooters and other accused involved in the crime. He is also accused of helping conceal the weapons used in the murder. After the arrest of Sajid Faddi and several other accused, Saddam allegedly went into hiding to evade capture.
A native of Amroha who was residing in Delhi’s Jafrabad area, Saddam reportedly operated a children’s garment shop. Police said he became associated with the Hashim Baba gang through Sohel alias Chappal.
According to the police, Saddam was first arrested in 2013 in an attempt-to-murder case along with Sohel. He was again arrested in 2018 in an extortion-cum-firing case involving an alleged demand of ₹1 lakh from a businessman in Jafrabad. Police also claimed he has been involved in two other attempt-to-murder cases linked to gang rivalry.
Saddam was wanted in a case registered at Greater Kailash Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. He had been declared a proclaimed offender by the court.
