Actor Isha Koppikar has responded to criticism on social media over her recent comments on democracy, saying she is unapologetic about her love for the country and dismissing attempts to label her for expressing her views.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Koppikar shared a message defending her stand.
“If loving my country makes me a label, so be it. I’d rather be proud than apologetic. Yes, I’m an Andh Bhakt. I’m a Bharat Bhakt,” she wrote.
The actor also reposted a message that read: “Opposing BJP is not Anti-National. But supporting Anti Nationals Just to oppose BJP is nothing less than anti national. Now Read that Again.”
Koppikar’s posts came after she faced criticism online for her remarks on democracy and for commenting on the debate surrounding Bollywood celebrities’ alleged silence over the CJP protests.
In a recent video shared on social media, the actor urged people to focus on the core issues instead of getting distracted by online debates and social media narratives.
She also spoke about the use of the term “dictatorship” in political discourse, arguing that it should not be used casually.
“The word ‘dictatorship’ is being used very casually. Democracy does not only mean freedom of speech. Democracy also means freedom of speech and responsibility. Dictatorship is where it is not possible to speak against the government or pay a heavy price,” she said.
Koppikar added that while people have the right to question the government and express differing opinions, they should also acknowledge positive work when it is done.
“We can all keep our own opinions. We can also ask questions to the government. And when good work is done, it is also necessary to give credit. This is the beauty of democracy,” she said.
Her remarks drew mixed reactions on social media, with some users supporting her views while others criticised her stance and linked it to her perceived political leanings.
