Chennai Mayor R. Priya on Monday approached the Greater Chennai Police and lodged a complaint alleging sustained online harassment, following which the Cyber Crime Wing initiated an investigation into the matter.
Priya met Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj at the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office in Vepery and sought action against unidentified persons whom she alleged were targeting her through social media platforms and other digital channels.
In her complaint, the Mayor alleged that objectionable content, including morphed photographs and edited images, was being circulated on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook with the intention of harming her reputation and misleading the public.
She further alleged that videos of her speeches delivered during official programmes and public events were being selectively edited and shared without context to create misleading narratives.
According to the complaint, the alleged harassment extended beyond social media, with unidentified persons repeatedly making calls and sending messages to her official office number, affecting the functioning of her office and causing inconvenience to staff members.
Following the complaint, police registered a case and began efforts to identify the individuals allegedly involved in the online activities. The Cyber Crime Wing is examining digital evidence, including social media posts, messages and call records, to trace those responsible.
Investigators will also look into possible violations under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
The complaint has drawn attention in Chennai’s political and civic circles, with the case highlighting concerns over the misuse of digital platforms for online harassment, defamation and circulation of manipulated content.
Police officials said further action would be taken after the completion of the investigation and identification of the persons behind the alleged online campaign.
