A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead on the institute campus on Sunday in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
The deceased was identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering department and a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 2:30 pm on Sunday. Preliminary investigation suggests that Singh allegedly fell from the fifth floor of the institute’s academic complex. His body was recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination.
Kamrup Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Officials said the exact cause would be established after the autopsy report and completion of the probe.
Investigators are examining all possible aspects of the case and recording statements from students and institute officials as part of the inquiry.
Sources at the institute said Singh was considered an academically strong student and had recently secured an internship with global investment banking firm Goldman Sachs.
IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal expressed grief over the incident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family. In a message to the campus community, he said the institute was in contact with the family and extending necessary support during the difficult time.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding student mental health and campus well-being at premier educational institutions.
IIT Guwahati had reported four student suicides in 2024, leading to renewed discussions on strengthening counselling facilities and addressing academic and psychological pressures faced by students.
Police said no final conclusion has been reached and further details will emerge after the investigation.
