Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to discredit Punjab’s education sector achievements by making “false allegations” of a paper leak.
Kejriwal claimed that Punjab’s education system had witnessed a major transformation under the AAP government, moving from the 27th position in national rankings to the top position. He alleged that the BJP was trying to undermine this progress by raising unfounded concerns over examination irregularities.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said that the AAP governments in Delhi and Punjab had completed 10 years and five years in office respectively without a single paper leak incident. He contrasted this with BJP-ruled states, where he alleged that examination paper leaks had repeatedly taken place.
“The entire country can see that paper leaks are taking place in BJP-ruled states, whereas the Aam Aadmi Party has governed two states without a single paper leak,” Kejriwal said.
Referring to the incident cited by the BJP, Kejriwal said that at two examination centres in Punjab, a few students allegedly attempted to use smart pens to capture images of question papers and obtain answers from outside. He said the students were caught immediately and maintained that the incident did not amount to a paper leak.
Kejriwal highlighted Punjab’s improvement in the education sector, stating that when the AAP government came to power in 2022, the state had been ranked 27th in education rankings, but had now moved ahead of Kerala to become number one.
He also criticised the action taken against students in connection with examination-related incidents, alleging that students were being subjected to police action despite earlier assurances that no such measures would be taken.
Questioning the Centre’s approach towards preventing paper leaks, Kejriwal said that strict laws alone would not be effective unless there was political will to act against those involved in such activities. He alleged that existing laws were sufficient if authorities were serious about identifying and punishing those responsible.
Kejriwal said the priority should be to take firm action against examination mafias and ensure accountability to protect the future of students.
