The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association’s (UPCA) Speed Hunt initiative has emerged as a major talent discovery programme, identifying 38 fast bowlers who have consistently clocked speeds above 134 kmph and earned a place in the upcoming player auction, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said on Monday.
Shukla highlighted the role of the UPT20 League in providing a platform for emerging cricketers from across Uttar Pradesh, saying the tournament has helped several players make their way into the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The fourth edition of the UPT20 League will begin on August 14 at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium, with Kashi Rudras taking on Meerut Mavericks in the opening match.
“This is the fourth edition of the UPT20 League, and the impact it has made over the past three seasons is there for everyone to see. This year alone, 18 players from Uttar Pradesh featured in the IPL,” Shukla said in a statement issued by the tournament organisers.
He added that many players received their breakthrough after impressive performances in the state league, which is closely monitored by IPL scouts searching for emerging talent.
Speaking about the Speed Hunt programme, Shukla said the initiative has created a pathway for talented pacers from different regions of Uttar Pradesh to compete at higher levels.
“The UPCA Speed Hunt has also been a major success. We have identified fast bowlers from across the state, and this year 38 bowlers, all consistently clocking over 134 kmph, earned a place in the auction,” he said.
Shukla also indicated that the league could expand beyond its current six-team format in future, provided the tournament maintains structural stability.
The upcoming 24-day season will feature 34 matches across Lucknow and Kanpur, including 13 double-header fixtures. The tournament will move from Ekana Stadium to Green Park Stadium for its second phase and knockout matches.
The playoffs will begin on September 3, with the final scheduled to be played in Kanpur on September 6.
