India captain Shreyas Iyer expressed delight after guiding the team to a commanding 3-0 T20I series sweep over Zimbabwe, describing the achievement as a special milestone in his leadership journey while praising the fearless approach and enthusiasm of the young squad.
India completed the clean sweep with a convincing 35-run victory in the third and final T20I at the Harare Sports Club, handing Iyer his first bilateral T20I series triumph as captain after previous series defeats in Ireland and England.
Reflecting on the series, Iyer credited the team’s young players for maintaining high intensity throughout the tour despite playing matches in quick succession. He said their energy, intent and fearless brand of cricket were exactly what he expected from the side, adding that the unbeaten series victory would remain a memorable achievement.
Iyer also dismissed suggestions that he carried significantly greater responsibility than the rest of the squad, noting that many of the younger players have already gained substantial experience through international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He said his primary role as captain was to ensure that players felt relaxed and confident, believing that such an environment allows them to perform at their best.
The India skipper praised the team’s collective effort with bat, ball and in the field, stressing that players had consistently stepped up and accepted responsibility during the series. He said preserving the momentum while maintaining consistency in attitude and approach would be crucial as India prepares for a busy white-ball calendar.
India are scheduled to host the West Indies for three One-Day Internationals and five T20Is, while Iyer is also set to lead the national side at the Asian Games T20 competition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Subject to confirmation, India could also travel to Bangladesh for a white-ball series before a proposed three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in September.
Looking ahead, Iyer said the team’s focus would remain on continuous improvement rather than results alone. He added that the players had been encouraged to raise their standards every time they took the field and to perform to the best of their abilities regardless of the match situation.
