Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the growing public participation in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, citing record plantation drives across the country and urging citizens to make tree plantation a part of their personal milestones and celebrations.
Addressing the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said the campaign had encouraged people from different sections of society to contribute towards environmental conservation.
He referred to a plantation drive in Ahmedabad’s Bhadaj area, where more than 3.5 lakh saplings were planted within an hour with the participation of over 25,000 people. The initiative, involving students, NCC cadets, volunteers and citizens, has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records, he said.
PM Modi also highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s plantation drive held on July 12, during which more than 35 crore saplings were planted in a single day. Calling it a matter of pride, he said the achievement was significant for him as a Member of Parliament from the state.
The Prime Minister also underlined the importance of wildlife conservation, stating that forests support not only human life but also numerous species dependent on natural ecosystems. Referring to Gujarat’s Gir forests, he said the return of the Indian Grey Hornbill after nearly six decades reflected sustained conservation and restoration efforts.
He urged people to plant trees in their mother’s name and associate environmental protection with important occasions in their lives, saying that a sapling planted today could become a legacy of greenery and clean air for future generations.
During the programme, PM Modi also renewed his appeal for celebrating Ganesh Utsav with eco-friendly idols made from locally sourced clay instead of Plaster of Paris or imported materials. He said choosing such idols would also represent respect for nature.
