The Pakistan government has criticised remarks made by Noreen Niazi, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a recent interview, with senior ministers alleging that her comments were detrimental to the country’s national interests and international image.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused Niazi of tarnishing Pakistan’s reputation abroad, while ministers Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and Tallal Chaudhry said such statements undermine the country’s credibility on the global stage.
According to reports, Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) summoned Niazi on July 18 for questioning after her interview circulated widely on social media. She is being investigated over allegations of disseminating “false, offensive and inflammatory” information.
The development has drawn criticism from Jemima Goldsmith, Imran Khan’s former wife, who accused the authorities of criminalising political speech and shrinking the space for public discourse.
