Three more persons have been arrested in connection with the violence during a protest rally in Kolkata on July 24 against alleged NEET examination paper leaks and other exam-related irregularities, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 14, police said on Sunday.
The fresh arrests were made by the Kolkata Police between Saturday night and Sunday after investigators examined CCTV footage and video recordings of the violence that broke out during the demonstration.
The arrested persons have been identified as Shahbaz Khan, Sheikh Muhammad Salman Hossain and Muhammad Zahiruddin. Khan is a resident of Karaya in south-eastern Kolkata, while Salman and Zahiruddin are residents of Rajabagan in Garden Reach and Bhangar respectively.
Earlier, 11 people were arrested after being identified through available video evidence.
Police have so far identified around 70 persons allegedly involved in the violence during the rally, which was jointly organised by the CJP and students’ and youth wings of Left parties. Seven FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident, including a suo motu case filed by Kolkata Police.
According to police sources, none of the 14 arrested persons are students or linked to the NEET examination results. Authorities have alleged that those arrested were involved in provoking violence and attacking police personnel and journalists during the protest.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while addressing the Assembly, alleged that anti-social elements from several areas of Kolkata were responsible for the attacks and claimed that their aim was to provoke police action and escalate tensions.
He said those found guilty would face action under the West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, which provides stricter measures against violent activities.
