The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced its candidate for the upcoming Tarn Taran by-election, becoming the second party to declare a nominee ahead of the Election Commission’s formal schedule. The by-election was necessitated following the sudden demise of AAP MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal.
Harjeet Singh Sandhu, a young and emerging political leader, has been selected to represent the BJP in this high-profile contest, which is expected to witness a multi-cornered fight.
Earlier, the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal was the first party to announce its candidate, naming Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur for the Tarn Taran seat.
Harmeet Singh Sandhu, an Akali leader who contested the 2022 elections against Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, recently left Shiromani Akali Dal to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He has been appointed as Halqa Incharge for the Tarn Taran by-election, though his official candidacy is yet to be declared.
The Congress party is expected to enter the fray but has not announced its candidate so far. Meanwhile, the Amritpal Singh-led Akali Dal Waris Punjab De has also confirmed its participation, as the seat falls under the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency represented by the jailed leader.
Political observers are keenly watching whether the newly formed Akali Dal, led by former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, will join the contest.
The Tarn Taran by-election is shaping up to be a closely watched battle with multiple parties vying for a crucial Punjab assembly seat.
