In a significant escalation of their anti-narcotics efforts, the Punjab Police and Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday launched a coordinated statewide crackdown targeting drug-related activities. Raids were conducted at 25 key locations, including properties linked to senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia in Amritsar and Chandigarh.
The operation, termed the largest joint action to date, is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged drug trafficking and financial links to narcotic networks. AAP leaders claimed that Vigilance officials are actively tracing drug money and gathering evidence connected to previous intelligence reports.
During the early morning searches, tensions flared at Majithia’s Green Avenue residence in Amritsar, where he and his wife, Ganieve Kaur Majithia—currently the MLA from Majitha—were seen confronting officials. The couple went live on social media, accusing authorities of unlawful entry. Ganieve Kaur alleged that nearly 30 personnel entered without consent. A similar raid was carried out at her official residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 4.
Majithia later claimed that over 50 officials stormed his properties without prior notice. He criticized the operation for barring both media and legal representatives from entering, calling it a violation of legal norms. According to him, the Chandigarh residence was searched in their absence, raising concerns about due process.
AAP spokesperson Neel Garg addressed the media, clarifying that the raids are part of an impartial investigation rooted in past legal proceedings. He emphasized that 9 properties in Amritsar alone have been raided and that the crackdown spans multiple cities, asserting the government’s commitment to justice without bias.
Majithia’s legal troubles trace back to a 2021 case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The charges were based on a 2018 Special Task Force (STF) report that implicated him in a transnational drug smuggling network active between 2004 and 2014. Specific accusations include the use of premises for drug activities, financing drug production, and abetting such offenses.
Despite the mounting pressure, Majithia has consistently denied the allegations, framing them as politically driven and orchestrated by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. In March 2025, the Supreme Court mandated his cooperation with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) following reports of non-compliance. The court underscored the importance of his participation to ensure a thorough and fair investigation.
As of now, no formal chargesheet has been filed, and the investigation remains open. Majithia maintains his innocence and claims the timing of the raids is linked to the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, alleging political vendetta.
