The World Health Organisation (WHO) is stepping up its response to Nepal’s devastating flood emergency and has released $150,000 in immediate funding, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday.
“WHO is scaling up its response to #Nepal’s flood emergency further, releasing USD150,000 in immediate funding, with additional resources expected to be released as needs assessments continue,” Ghebreyesus said in a post on X.
He said WHO had deployed emergency supplies within hours of the disaster, including interagency emergency health supplies capable of providing essential materials for nearly 10,000 people for three months.
The supplies also include tents, 10,000 masks, gloves and hand sanitisers.
Ghebreyesus said the immediate priority was to support health services in affected communities and restore services disrupted by the floods.
WHO is also providing coordination among relief partners, disease surveillance and technical assistance aimed at protecting public health, he said, stressing that the response was being carried out under the leadership of the Nepalese government.
“As the flood-affected communities face immense challenges, sustained support from all partners will be critical,” the WHO chief said, adding that the organisation remained ready to provide assistance based on Nepal’s evolving needs.
Meanwhile, the United States said around 90 Americans remained unaccounted for in the Nepal-China border region after the floods cut off remote communities. Five US citizens had reached safety in Nepal, while no American deaths had been reported, according to a US State Department spokesperson.
The US embassies in Nepal and China are working with local authorities and tour operators to locate and assist Americans in affected areas. Nepal-led search and rescue operations were continuing.
The floods have caused extensive disruption in remote parts of Nepal, with authorities continuing rescue, relief and damage-assessment efforts.
