Bidhannagar Police have arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the West Bengal Police in connection with an alleged rape at a guest house in Salt Lake, Kolkata, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Ajmal Haque, is posted at Nalhati police station in Birbhum district. He was arrested in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Monday by a team from Bidhannagar East Police Station.
Haque was brought back to Kolkata on transit remand and produced before the Bidhannagar court on Tuesday. Police have sought his custody for further investigation.
According to investigators, the alleged incident took place on June 19. The woman subsequently submitted a written complaint at Bidhannagar East Police Station in July, alleging that she had gone to a guest house in CL Block, Salt Lake, where the accused allegedly raped her.
Police said Haque had sought anticipatory bail but later went absconding after disobeying the court’s order. Bidhannagar East Police subsequently contacted Birbhum District Police and began efforts to trace him.
Investigators received information that Haque was hiding in Mumbai. Acting on mobile phone location data and other inputs gathered during the investigation, a police team travelled to Mumbai and arrested him.
“Based on the location of his mobile phone and information obtained during the investigation, it was learned that he was hiding in Mumbai. A team reached there, conducted a raid and arrested Ajmal Haque,” a police official said.
The investigation is now focused on gathering evidence related to the complaint. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, the prior contact between the accused and the complainant, and other potential evidence, including the guest house register and CCTV footage.
