BJP Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia has been entrusted with two key organisational responsibilities within 24 hours, with the party appointing him Punjab in-charge a day after naming him National General Secretary in the team of newly elected BJP president Nitin Nabin.
Thanking the BJP central leadership for the responsibility, Poonia said the appointment reflected the confidence placed in him by the party and cautioned that underestimating the BJP in Punjab would be a mistake.
Poonia said the BJP would focus on strengthening its organisational network in Punjab and intensify preparations for the forthcoming Assembly elections. He claimed there was growing dissatisfaction with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and said an undercurrent of support for the BJP was visible in the state.
He also criticised the AAP government over the drug menace and law-and-order situation, claiming that these issues had contributed to public resentment and that an anti-incumbency sentiment was emerging.
Poonia said the BJP would contest the elections with full strength and work towards forming a government on its own in Punjab.
Recalling his experience in Haryana, Poonia said the BJP provides organisational and political training to its workers.
“I learned a great deal in Haryana and implemented it on the ground. The success in Haryana was not the work of any single individual; it was the result of an excellent team and full support from the Centre,” he said.
He also acknowledged the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in grassroots-level organisational work.
Poonia described it as a matter of pride for an ordinary BJP worker to be given major responsibilities such as National General Secretary and Punjab in-charge.
Assessing the political challenges ahead, Poonia identified the AAP government and the Congress, which has a decades-old political presence in Punjab, as the BJP’s two major competitors. He said expanding the party’s political base and strengthening its organisation would remain key priorities ahead of the Assembly elections.
Poonia’s appointment as Punjab in-charge, coming just a day after his elevation as National General Secretary, gives him a significant role in the BJP’s organisational and electoral preparations in the state. He will continue to shoulder his national-level organisational responsibilities while working to strengthen the party’s position in Punjab.
