A man allegedly strangled his wife to death and later threw his two minor children into a pond following a dispute linked to his suspicions about his wife’s character in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around midnight on Monday in Jhalariya village under the Kanadiya police station area. The accused, identified as Sunil Chauhan, a driver and native of Satwas in neighbouring Dewas district, has been taken into custody.
According to police, Chauhan allegedly took his wife Anita to an isolated spot near their house and strangled her. He also allegedly attacked her with a knife before leaving her body there.
He subsequently returned home, took his 13-year-old daughter Mahi and 12-year-old son Ajay to a nearby pond and allegedly threw both children into the water.
Ajay survived by pretending to be dead, police said. After managing to get out of the pond, he reached a nearby village and informed residents, following which the police were alerted.
A police team reached Chauhan’s house at around 1 a.m., but he was not there. He was later found wandering in the area and taken into custody. Police also said he had allegedly attempted to take his own life.
After learning that Mahi was missing, police called in a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team to conduct a search. Darkness initially prevented an immediate operation. The team reached the site around 2.30 a.m. and recovered the girl’s body from the pond at approximately 3 a.m.
The bodies of Anita and Mahi were sent for post-mortem examination, police said.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Chauhan suspected his wife’s character, although investigators are questioning him to establish the exact motive and sequence of events.
The incident has shocked residents of Jhalariya village. Police teams are continuing their investigation, while the surviving child is receiving medical care.
A case is being registered against the accused and further investigation is underway, police said.
