Actress Taapsee Pannu has said cinema becomes more compelling when women characters are allowed to be flawed, complicated, ambitious and unapologetically themselves.
Taapsee is set to participate in the panel discussion ‘From Pink to Power: Breaking Stereotypes Through Cinema’ at the 14th edition of the Jagran Film Festival, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from August 20 to 23 at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre.
The Jagran Film Festival, described as the world’s largest travelling film festival, brings together voices from Indian cinema while exploring how films can challenge perspectives, encourage conversations and reflect a changing society.
Speaking about the upcoming session, Taapsee said breaking stereotypes begins with the willingness to take risks and portray women who do not necessarily conform to conventional expectations.
“For me, breaking stereotypes has always started with being willing to take a risk and play a woman who may not fit into the version of her that people expect to see,” she said.
The discussion will explore how cinema can challenge deeply rooted stereotypes, influence perceptions of women and encourage audiences to move beyond familiar narratives.
Taapsee is also expected to reflect on her career, the choices that have shaped her filmography and the risks involved in moving away from conventional roles.
She cited her films ‘Pink’ and ‘Thappad’ as examples of movies that contributed to wider conversations because their female characters were not designed to conform to familiar stereotypes.
“Films like ‘Pink’ and ‘Thappad’ became part of a larger conversation because the characters were not created to simply fit a familiar mould. I have always believed that cinema becomes more interesting when we allow women to be flawed, complicated, ambitious and unapologetically themselves,” she said.
The actress added that she looked forward to discussing the creative choices behind such roles and the conversations they generated.
The Jagran Film Festival will bring together filmmakers, actors and other industry voices during its four-day New Delhi edition.
