Bengali actress Rupa Umashankar Dutta, arrested in connection with an alleged theft of valuables worth Rs 1.48 lakh in Mumbai’s Colaba area, has been granted bail by a Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
According to her advocate Sunil Pandey, the court granted Dutta bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and directed her not to tamper with evidence or leave the country without permission. The case was registered following a complaint by Marine Drive resident Dimple Singhvi.
According to the complaint, Singhvi’s purse was allegedly stolen on July 12 while she was travelling through crowded areas between Babulnath Temple and Colaba. The purse reportedly contained a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at around Rs 1.20 lakh, Rs 10,000 in cash, Apple AirPods worth approximately Rs 15,000, a wallet and personal documents.
Colaba Police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage, which allegedly showed Dutta following the complainant. She was subsequently arrested. Police also claimed to have recovered some of the stolen property from her possession.
Dutta has worked in Hindi and Bengali films and television, including the 2005 film Saathi and the television serial Jai Maa Vaishno Devi. She was also arrested in 2022 on allegations of pickpocketing at the Kolkata Book Fair.
Appearing for Dutta, advocate Pandey argued that she had been falsely implicated and was a victim of circumstances. After hearing the arguments, the court granted her bail.
The allegations against Dutta remain subject to the ongoing legal proceedings.
