Eight labourers were killed and 23 others injured after a pickup van carrying them collided head-on with an oncoming truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district, police said.
The accident occurred around midnight near Chhimka village in the Gohad area on National Highway-719. The labourers were returning to their villages in Uttar Pradesh after completing paddy transplantation work in the Gwalior region.
According to police, 29 labourers were travelling in the pickup van when the accident took place. Gohad Chauraha police station in-charge Ramnaresh Yadav said the vehicle was travelling at an estimated speed of 80-90 kmph.
Yadav said cattle were on the highway when they suddenly came in front of the pickup. The driver attempted to avoid them, causing the vehicle to swerve into the path of the oncoming truck.
The collision was so severe that the pickup was badly damaged, trapping several labourers inside. Police and local residents carried out rescue operations and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
Five bodies have been kept at Gohad and three at Gwalior, while authorities are working to establish the identities of the deceased.
The labourers had travelled from different villages to the Gwalior region for paddy transplantation work and were returning to their homes in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
Police said the presence of cattle on the highway and the pickup’s high speed were among the factors being examined. The damaged vehicles were removed and traffic movement was restored after the accident caused temporary disruption.
A case has been registered and an investigation is underway. Police said further details regarding the deceased and the circumstances leading to the collision are awaited.
