A political confrontation between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Delhi Police intensified on Tuesday after former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal questioned the alleged detention of party MLA Kuldeep Kumar and accused police personnel of damaging CCTV cameras at his residence and taking away the digital video recorder (DVR).
Kejriwal, in a post on X, alleged that police picked up Kumar from his home around 4 a.m. and said authorities had not disclosed the MLA’s whereabouts or the reason for his detention.
“Prime Minister Modi, where is our MLA Kuldeep Kumar? At 4 a.m., your Delhi Police picked up Kuldeep Kumar from his home, smashed the CCTV cameras, and took away the DVR. Your police are revealing nothing,” Kejriwal said.
He questioned the manner in which the MLA was allegedly taken away and said such action would amount to “hooliganism” that people would not accept.
Kejriwal also shared a post by AAP leader Sanjeev Jha, who claimed that people in plain clothes took Kumar away early in the morning and damaged cameras installed at his house before removing the DVR.
Jha said he had been outside the DCP Eastern Range office for around two-and-a-half hours seeking information about Kumar but had received no response. He questioned whether raising one’s voice for justice for Dalits had become a crime and alleged that police action was being used to intimidate an elected representative.
The allegations come amid a dispute between the AAP and Delhi Police following the killing of 24-year-old MCD sanitation worker Anil Kumar in Kalyanpuri while he was on duty on Sunday morning. CCTV footage reportedly showed an attacker stabbing him with a knife. Police arrested a suspect on Monday, though his identity has not been disclosed.
AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj has separately accused authorities of pressuring the deceased worker’s family to conduct his last rites despite their demand for justice and compensation.
According to the AAP, the family is seeking Rs 1 crore in compensation and wants action against those responsible for the killing. The party also claimed that thousands of sanitation workers have been staging a sit-in protest for the past two days.
AAP leaders alleged that the victim’s body was moved from the hospital to his residence and that relatives were subsequently pressured to proceed with the cremation. They further claimed that some family members were taken away by police early in the morning.
The party said the deceased belonged to a poor Dalit family and maintained that the relatives should be allowed to decide when and how the last rites are conducted. According to the AAP, the family wants a response from the Delhi government on its demands before proceeding with the cremation.
The allegations regarding Kumar’s detention and the handling of the sanitation worker’s case have further escalated the political standoff between the AAP and Delhi Police.
