Chhattisgarh Police have registered a case against Congress functionary Supriya Shrinate and social media influencer Neha Singh Rathore following a complaint by BJP state spokesperson Ujjwal Deepak over the circulation of a video allegedly misrepresented as footage from Independence Day celebrations.
The FIR was registered on the evening of August 17. According to the complaint, the two allegedly shared photographs and videos from an earlier BJP training programme while presenting them as visuals from August 15, 2026.
Deepak alleged that Shrinate, identified as Congress national spokesperson and national media in-charge, along with Rathore and other social media users, circulated a video showing former Chhattisgarh minister and Kurud BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar waving the BJP flag.
The complaint states that the footage was actually recorded on March 22, 2026, during the ‘Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Training Maha Abhiyan’ held in Kurud, Dhamtari district.
The video went viral on August 15 with claims that Chandrakar had hoisted the BJP flag instead of the National Flag during Independence Day celebrations. The circulation of the video led to allegations of disrespect towards the Tricolour.
According to the complaint, subsequent verification established that the footage belonged to the earlier BJP training programme and was not recorded on Independence Day. Deepak alleged that the old footage was deliberately amplified on August 15, potentially creating public confusion, political tension and unrest.
Police said the case has been registered under Sections 336(4), 353(2) and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is underway.
The BJP has also sought removal of the allegedly misleading content through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and the concerned social media platforms, besides action against the accounts involved.
A BJP delegation that approached the authorities included Deepak, Dr Kiran Baghel, Rajiv Chakraborty, state media coordinator Rahul Rai and Mahila Morcha district president Kritika Jain, among others.
