A special NIA court in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday issued a non-bailable warrant against Pakistan-based terror handler Mohammad Yaqoob alias Abu Sumana in connection with a case involving alleged terror activities in the Kashmir Valley.
The warrant was issued after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) informed the court that Yaqoob’s alleged role had emerged during an investigation into the recovery of a Chinese grenade and 15 live cartridges from Mohammad Naqeeb Bhat in Srinagar.
According to the NIA, Abu Sumana allegedly provided directions to arrested Pakistani terrorists Abdullah Rajput alias Kamran Ahmed and Khubaib alias Usman Jatt. The agency alleged that he instructed them to carry out terrorist activities in the Kashmir Valley targeting security forces and civilians.
The court noted that Yaqoob was absconding and allowed the NIA’s application seeking issuance of the non-bailable warrant. The accused has been proceeded against under Section 35 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), according to the agency.
The latest court action comes after a similar warrant was issued against Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed by the same special NIA court on July 8 in connection with the investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack.
The warrant against Saeed followed a supplementary chargesheet filed by the NIA two days earlier. The 76-year-old Pakistan-based accused was chargesheeted in his personal capacity as well as in his alleged role as chief of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its proxy front, The Resistance Front (TRF).
Saeed has been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the UAPA. According to the court order, the NIA told the court that Saeed, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan’s Punjab province, was deliberately evading arrest in the Pahalgam terror attack case.
The agency sought an open-dated non-bailable warrant against Saeed to facilitate further proceedings and legal action during the investigation.
The Pahalgam attack took place on April 22 last year, when terrorists killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in south Kashmir. Saeed has been designated a global terrorist by India and the United States and is also accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
