Moscow came under what the city’s mayor described as the largest Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian capital in two years, with 620 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) reported to have targeted the Moscow region overnight.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the drones approached the region from Monday evening until 5 a.m. Tuesday. According to him, Russian air defences destroyed 180 of the UAVs, while emergency teams were deployed at locations where debris fell.
No casualties or major damage were immediately reported in Moscow, according to the mayor.
The aerial threat also disrupted air travel. Flight operations were temporarily suspended at Vnukovo, Zhukovsky and Domodedovo airports, while Sheremetyevo operated under partial restrictions.
The latest attack followed another large-scale drone assault reported on Sunday night, when around 600 UAVs were said to have targeted Moscow.
Drone strikes have also resulted in casualties in other parts of Russia. On August 12, three people were killed and eight injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk, according to Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev.
Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko subsequently declared a state of emergency after several educational facilities were damaged and two water mains were ruptured, affecting water supplies. One of the mains has since been repaired, while work on the second was continuing.
Authorities in other Russian-controlled or Russian regions also reported casualties over the past 24 hours. Two people were killed and three injured in drone strikes in the Belgorod region. In the Russia-controlled Luhansk region, one child was killed and a teenager and seven adults were wounded. One person was also reported killed in Crimea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the August 12 strike had targeted Russia’s naval base in Novorossiysk, a key facility for the Russian Black Sea Fleet. He said air defence positions, piers and seaport infrastructure were hit.
