Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap’s dinner outing with director Imtiaz Ali and friends and family drew attention online, but it was his tongue-in-cheek T-shirt that emerged as the highlight of the evening.
Kashyap shared photographs from the gathering on social media on Tuesday, wearing a red T-shirt featuring the words “dimagi nakal” along with the line “been into this since my school days”.
The phrase appears to be a play on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent reference to “dimagi naxals” in his Independence Day address. Modi had warned against people he described as ideological supporters who manipulate policies and pose a threat to society, and called for such elements to be identified and isolated.
In his post, the filmmaker wrote, “Family dinner and then my t shirt that drew more attention .. t shirt by @yehhaihindicinema (sic).”
The unusual T-shirt quickly became the focus of reactions from social media users, many of whom appreciated Kashyap’s characteristic humour.
One user commented, “Deliberate use of Dimaag with that Dimaagi T-shirt. Love the sarkasm”, while another wrote, “I love that t-shirt.. proud to be Dimagi nakal.”
A third user jokingly suggested that his next T-shirt could carry the phrase “Andhnamazi”. Another social media user urged Kashyap to consider launching his own merchandise.
One admirer also expressed delight at seeing the filmmaker “in his old form” again, writing, “Sir purani form mein wapas agaye hai.”
Another user brought attention to Kashyap’s equation with Imtiaz Ali, commenting, “Anurag Kashyap calling Imtiaz Ali his family is my Roman Empire.”
