Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney has called for a mission-mode implementation of the Digital Agriculture Mission in Punjab, stressing the need to bring all eligible farmers in the state onto the digital platform.
Dr. Sahney raised the issue in Parliament, following which the Union Ministry of Agriculture informed that more than 3.68 lakh Farmer IDs have been created in Punjab. However, against an estimated 23.62 lakh eligible farmers in the state, only around 15.6 per cent have so far been registered under the Digital Agriculture framework.
The MP urged the Punjab Government to accelerate the process and ensure that Farmer IDs are generated for all eligible farmers at the earliest.
Dr. Sahney said Punjab, as the country’s leading food-producing state, should take the lead in adopting digital agriculture solutions. He said Digital Farmer IDs would help farmers access artificial intelligence-based advisories, precision farming technologies, targeted government schemes and improved agricultural planning.
He also welcomed the Centre’s support for farmer registration camps, Digital Crop Surveys, information technology infrastructure and Project Monitoring Units under the Digital Agriculture Mission.
Dr. Sahney emphasised that a comprehensive registration drive was needed to ensure that every eligible farmer becomes part of the digital agriculture ecosystem and benefits from emerging technologies in farming.
