At least 16 people were killed and 28 others injured after a bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai on Wednesday, according to local media reports citing the Ministry of Health and Population.
The accident occurred before the Al-Saada area as the bus was travelling towards Nuweiba, Egypt Today reported.
Authorities deployed 20 ambulances to the accident site to evacuate the injured and provide first aid. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed officials to ensure that the injured receive the highest level of medical care.
Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy also instructed officials to provide emergency relief and take necessary measures to support those affected by the accident.
The latest crash comes amid continued concerns over road safety in Egypt. In August, 18 people were killed and 30 others injured after two vehicles carrying workers collided in Ismailia Governorate, according to Ahram Online.
The August crash took place on the Al-Dawawis link road near the Al-Shabab electricity station. The injured were shifted to Qassasin Central Hospital for treatment, while security forces and ambulance teams rushed to the scene. Authorities subsequently launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Official figures indicate that road accidents remain a major cause of fatalities in Egypt. According to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), road accident deaths increased 10.8 per cent to 5,829 in 2025, while injuries rose 10.7 per cent to 84,553.
Children below the age of 15 recorded the highest number of fatalities among all age groups in 2025, with 1,580 deaths and 29,101 injuries, according to CAPMAS figures.
