Maharashtra Family Welcomes Baby Girl in Chariot After 200 Years Without a Daughter

Beed, September 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A family in Maharashtra’s Beed district celebrated the birth of a baby girl in an elaborate manner, welcoming the newborn and her mother in a chariot procession after the family said it was the first time in four generations that a daughter had been born.

The Dahifale family named the baby Gargi. After she and her mother were discharged from the hospital, they were brought home in a decorated chariot amid drums, cymbals and dancing.

Family members said no daughter had been born in their family for nearly two centuries.

The baby’s grandfather said he considered himself fortunate to witness the long-awaited celebration.

“It is a great fortune to have a daughter in the family. For so many years, we had the regret of not having a daughter, and today that has been fulfilled,” he said.

Gargi’s grandmother, Surekha Dahifale, described the newborn as ‘Lakshmi Devi’, referring to the Hindu goddess of wealth. She said the family decided while still at the hospital that the baby would be given a grand welcome.

The baby’s father also expressed his happiness, saying daughters often share a special bond with their fathers.

“Daughters are usually more close to their fathers; we will raise her like a flower,” he said, adding that while people generally wished for a son, having a daughter brought a different feeling.

Celebrations around the birth of girl children have also been reported from other parts of the country. In Rajasthan’s Piplantri village, 111 saplings are planted to mark the birth of every girl child.

The practice was started by former village sarpanch Shyam Sunder Paliwal following the death of his daughter. It became a symbol of changing attitudes towards the birth of girls in a region that had historically faced a skewed child sex ratio and cases of female foeticide.
