The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed Balwant Singh Rajoana to undergo treatment for his eye condition at PGIMER, Chandigarh, declining his request to have the procedure performed at a private hospital in Patiala.
Rajoana, who is lodged in Patiala Central Jail, had approached the High Court after developing cataracts in both eyes.
He sought permission from the court to undergo treatment and surgery at Dr R.S. Randhawa Eye Hospital in Patiala rather than at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
In his petition, Rajoana submitted that cataracts in both his eyes were causing him pain and required surgical intervention.
He informed the High Court that he had already undergone an examination at PGIMER in January this year. Rajoana expressed his willingness to bear the expenses of treatment at the private Patiala hospital and undergo the procedure under appropriate police security.
The court, however, did not accept his request for treatment at the private facility.
Considering that Rajoana had already been examined for his eye condition at PGIMER, the High Court directed that the required treatment and surgery be undertaken at the Chandigarh institute itself.
Rajoana has been incarcerated for around three decades following his conviction in the case relating to the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
Beant Singh was killed in a bomb explosion outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995.
Rajoana was awarded the death sentence in the assassination case and is presently lodged in Patiala Central Jail.
The issue of his death sentence has separately remained before the Supreme Court. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sought commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.
