The BJP and Samajwadi Party on Wednesday condemned the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for posting an edited photograph from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other world leaders were cropped out.
The move triggered sharp criticism from Indian political leaders, who described it as an attempt to distort the summit’s official proceedings and said it reflected poorly on Pakistan.
West Bengal Minister and BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said such actions would only damage Pakistan’s standing internationally.
“The people of Pakistan indulge in such fraud and trickery, which is why no one in the world trusts them. Whether PM Modi’s photo is there or not makes no difference at all. They are only tarnishing their own country’s image,” Ghosh told reporters.
Samajwadi Party leader S.T. Hasan also criticised the Pakistan PMO, saying Islamabad should not resort to such tactics.
“This is a very cheap and disgraceful act. Pakistan should not stoop to such a low level. Our country is far ahead of Pakistan in every respect. Its only job is to spread terrorism, and it has shot itself in the foot,” Hasan told IANS.
Hasan further claimed that Pakistan had failed to respond to Prime Minister Modi’s remarks on terrorism at the SCO Summit and suggested that the edited photograph was a reaction to that.
The controversy erupted after the Pakistan PMO posted a group photograph from the SCO Council of Heads of State Summit on X on Tuesday. The image had been cropped from both sides, leaving out PM Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several other leaders.
The Pakistan PMO captioned the post: “Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in a group photo with heads of States at the SCO Council of Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 1 September 2026.”
Hours later, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif posted the original photograph, which included all the leaders, including PM Modi.
Sharif, in his accompanying post, said he was honoured to address the SCO Council of Heads of State Meeting as Pakistan assumed the SCO Chairmanship for 2027. He also highlighted Pakistan’s “immense sacrifices in the fight against terrorism”.
At the summit, PM Modi called for the West Asia conflict to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy and urged SCO members to reject “double standards” in the fight against terrorism.
His remarks were made in the presence of Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
