At least 11 people were killed and six others injured after a three-storey residential building collapsed in the Harbanspura area of Lahore, Pakistan, late Wednesday night, according to local media reports.
Rescue operations continued on Thursday as emergency teams searched through the debris for survivors. Officials said a minor girl was still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Lahore Deputy Commissioner’s spokesperson Harris Ali said the death toll rose to 11 after rescuers recovered the body of a woman from the collapsed structure.
According to officials, three brothers lived in the building along with their families. Their sister and her children were reportedly visiting the house for a birthday celebration when the building suddenly collapsed.
The exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined. Lahore Deputy Commissioner retired Captain Muhammad Ali Ijaz has ordered an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the collapse and directed officials to ensure the safe rescue of anyone still trapped under the debris.
The latest tragedy comes just weeks after another fatal building-related incident in Lahore. On June 30, the roof of a private tuition academy in the city’s Kahna area collapsed, killing at least 14 children and injuring several others.
Following that incident, the Human Rights Council (HRC) of Pakistan expressed serious concern over alleged negligence in the inspection of educational institutions and residential buildings. The rights body called for a transparent investigation, accountability for those responsible, proper medical treatment for the injured and financial and psychological support for the affected families.
The HRC had also urged the Pakistani authorities to strengthen safety measures and building inspections to prevent similar tragedies, stressing that ensuring a safe environment for children is a primary responsibility of the state.
