Punjab Water Resources, Mining & Geology, and Soil & Water Conservation Minister Barinder Goyal on Thursday inaugurated canal irrigation projects at Buta Singh Wala and Badshahpur villages in the Shutrana Assembly constituency, stating that the initiatives will provide irrigation facilities to nearly 68,500 acres of agricultural land across 56 villages.
Addressing the gathering, Goyal said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is undertaking extensive efforts to expand canal irrigation infrastructure across the state to strengthen agriculture and ensure efficient water management.
The Minister said canals, distributaries and sub-minors spanning 137.13 kilometres have been renovated in the Shutrana constituency at a cost of ₹80.35 crore. The upgraded network is expected to provide canal irrigation to approximately 68,500 acres of farmland in 56 villages.
He further informed that 53.9 kilometres of pipelines have also been laid at a cost of ₹8.89 crore, extending canal water to around 9,302 acres of agricultural land in 18 villages.
During his visit, Goyal also reviewed flood protection works along the Ghaggar river at Badshahpur. He said vulnerable sections of the embankment have been strengthened with stone pitching and wire mesh at a cost of ₹2.46 crore. He added that the Drainage Department has undertaken extensive measures to reinforce the riverbanks and announced that a river gauge, similar to the one installed at Khanouri, will also be set up at Badshahpur to strengthen flood monitoring.
Shutrana MLA Kulwant Singh Bazigar expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Minister Barinder Goyal for fulfilling a long-pending demand of farmers. He said the projects would ensure dependable irrigation facilities, benefit thousands of farmers and further strengthen the agricultural economy of the region.
Former MLA Vaninder Kaur Loomba, Superintending Engineer Rajinder Ghai, Executive Engineers Gundeep Singh and Akash Aggarwal, along with a large number of farmers and local residents, were present during the inauguration.
