UK Lawmakers Call for Independent Probe into Alleged Human Rights Violations in PoK

London, July 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Several British parliamentarians have voiced concern over reports of violence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), calling for an independent investigation into allegations of excessive force by Pakistani security personnel during recent unrest in the region.

The lawmakers referred to reports claiming that more than 40 civilians were killed and several others critically injured during a crackdown on protesters.

Labour MP Liam Byrne described reports of live ammunition allegedly being used against peaceful demonstrators as “deeply alarming” and termed the reported communications blackout and alleged human rights violations in the region “completely unacceptable.”

Byrne said the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir, a cross-party group in the UK Parliament, had made two immediate demands: urgent discussions with the Pakistan High Commission in London and meetings with UK Foreign Office ministers to press Pakistan on the issue.

“We need immediate de-escalation. We need calm heads. And crucially, we need the human rights of Kashmiris to be observed now,” Byrne said, adding that a peaceful resolution should be pursued in line with longstanding international commitments.

British MP Adnan Hussain also expressed concern over the reported deaths, describing the situation as a tragedy. He said any alleged use of excessive or unlawful force by Pakistani authorities should be subjected to a full, independent and transparent investigation.

“I urge all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilian life and engage in peaceful dialogue. Lasting solutions can only be achieved through calm, constructive engagement rather than further violence or escalation,” Hussain said, adding that his thoughts were with those affected, including constituents with family members in the region.

Meanwhile, Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said reports emerging from Rawalakot reflected what she described as a longstanding pattern of unlawful violence against protesters in the territory.

Callamard urged Pakistani authorities to lift the reported internet and mobile communications blackout and allow access to independent media and observers.

She also called for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into the alleged use of force by security personnel, stating that communications restrictions could hamper independent verification of developments on the ground.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions surrounding the ongoing legislative Assembly elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, where reports of protests and security operations have drawn international attention.
