SAD (Punar Surjit) Urges Akal Takht to Summon Sukhbir, Dhami and Badungar Before June 27 SGPC General House

Chandigarh, June 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Political Affairs Committee of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar-Surjit) has urged Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj to summon SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, former SGPC President Kirpal Singh Badungar and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal before the June 27 General House meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

The demand was raised during a meeting of the party’s Political Affairs Committee held at Makhan Shah Lubana Bhawan in Chandigarh under the chairmanship of party Secretary General Gurpartap Singh Wadala.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Wadala said the committee unanimously passed a resolution appealing to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to seek explanations from Dhami and Badungar regarding their alleged failure to comply with the December 2, 2024 hukamnamas issued by the Panj Singh Sahibaan.

Wadala maintained that the December 2 directives had clearly mandated the formation of a seven-member committee under the leadership of Harjinder Singh Dhami for restructuring and strengthening the Shiromani Akali Dal by bringing forward new leadership.

According to Wadala, Dhami initially resigned from both the SGPC presidency and the seven-member committee, but later withdrew his resignation as SGPC President on the directions of Sukhbir Singh Badal. However, he allegedly chose not to resume his role in the committee tasked with implementing the directives of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He further claimed that Kirpal Singh Badungar subsequently also stepped away from the committee, thereby failing to fulfil responsibilities assigned under the hukamnama.

The party leader questioned why those now advocating implementation of the Akal Takht directives had themselves allegedly failed to honour the orders when responsibility rested upon them.

Wadala further alleged that Harjinder Singh Dhami continues to share platforms and public events with Sukhbir Singh Badal despite the latter having publicly described the December 2 hukamnamas as a conspiracy against him. He said complaints submitted by several SGPC members regarding remarks made by Sukhbir Singh Badal should also be examined and decided upon by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The Political Affairs Committee also called upon the Jathedar to ensure implementation of all pending directives and hukamnamas issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib since 1999 that, according to the party, were never effectively enforced.

Wadala said the recent June 15 hukamnama had generated hope within Panthic circles that long-pending issues relating to compliance with Akal Takht directives would now be addressed firmly and impartially.

The committee further demanded that individuals who had accepted responsibility before the Panj Singh Sahibaan and the Sangat on December 2, 2024, but later retracted their position, should be subjected to complete Panthic scrutiny.

Praising the Jathedar for taking decisions without regard to political pressures, the committee expressed confidence that similar action would be taken in the cases involving Harjinder Singh Dhami, Kirpal Singh Badungar and Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Among those present at the meeting were Bibi Jagir Kaur, Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra, Gobind Singh Longowal, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Iqbal Singh Jhoonda, Santa Singh Umaidpuri, Gaganjit Singh Barnala, Bhai Manjeet Singh and several other senior leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar-Surjit).

The information was shared with the media by party Media Incharge Tajinder Singh Pannu.
