Dr Satbir Singh Gosal’s Four-Year Tenure as PAU Vice Chancellor Concludes Amid Tributes for Institutional Growth

Ludhiana, August 18, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The four-year tenure of Dr Satbir Singh Gosal as Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) concluded on August 18, marked by a series of farewell interactions celebrating his contributions to the institution’s academic, research, and infrastructural development.

University officers, faculty members, employee unions, and his personal office staff gathered for three distinct sessions to acknowledge his leadership, accessibility, and collaborative approach since taking charge on August 19, 2022.

Reflecting on the milestone, Dr Gosal expressed deep appreciation for the collective cooperation extended by the entire university fraternity, emphasizing that PAU’s progress was a shared endeavor involving teachers, scientists, officers, and supporting staff.

An eminent agricultural biotechnologist, Dr Gosal holds a B.Sc. from Panjab University, Chandigarh, alongside an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Plant Breeding from PAU, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Nottingham and the John Innes Centre, Norwich, as well as specialized training in GMO biosafety in the United States.

His prior administrative leadership at PAU included roles as Director of Research, Additional Director Research, Founder Director of the School of Agricultural Biotechnology, and Head of the Department of Biotechnology.

His professional accolades include a Royal Society London Bursary, Rockefeller Foundation Career Fellowships, a Lifetime Achievement Award and the presidency of the Punjab Academy of Sciences, alongside consultative and advisory roles with the FAO/IAEA, Australian Research Council, and the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

His academic output comprises 20 externally funded projects, 207 refereed research papers, 12 books, and the mentorship of 77 postgraduate students.

During his tenure, PAU secured the top ranking among 75 agricultural universities nationwide in the NIRF ratings for 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The institution also entered the global top 100 agricultural universities, earned an A+ grade from ICAR, received the Academic Leadership Award 2026 at the 17th Agriculture Leadership Conclave, and joined the BRICS Network of Universities to foster global academic exchanges. Institutionally, the period saw the appointment of approximately 442 permanent employees and the onboarding of 23 Honorary Visiting Professors from India and abroad.

Financial backing was significantly strengthened with a special annual capital grant of Rs 30 crore from the Punjab Government, modernizing student amenities, laboratories, hostels, the University Library, seed farms, and the Gene Bank.

Capital investments included the bulk purchase of 50 new tractors and agricultural machinery, while a Clean and Green Drive transformed the Student’s Home surroundings into an interactive campus zone complete with a walking path, open-air theater, and modern cafeterias.

On the research front, the university established a Speed Breeding Facility, a Technology Park, and a Drone Pilot Training Centre, deploying advanced technologies such as auto-steering tractors, remote-controlled paddy transplanters, and sensor-based irrigation systems.

Faculty researchers recommended 65 new crop varieties and hybrids, with wheat strains PBW 826 and PBW 872 garnering national acclaim from ICAR. Certified seed production expanded markedly, rising from 45,000 quintals in 2022-23 to 72,000 quintals in 2024-25.

Dr Gosal’s leadership also prioritized international cooperation and farmer outreach, cementing partnerships with institutions in the United States, Canada, Argentina, and the World Bank. Initiatives such as Sarkar-Kisan Milnis and a dedicated convention connecting NRI progressive farmers with local cultivators broadened the university’s outreach.

Communication channels were modernized via digital platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and e-Kheti Sandesh, complemented by newly established alumni centers, a Media Centre, and daily agricultural radio broadcasts with All India Radio, Ludhiana.
